Fawn

“The next time we all get together, it better be with drinks involved and at an hour that isn’t ungodly after working the nightshift,” Vanessa says once Sly is with the guys, pulling gloves out of her a small first-aid kit, sliding them on, and getting to work.

“Tell me about it. I’m sorry to keep taking away from your time off. I’d tell Sylvester I’m alright, but sadly, I don’t think that’s the case.” I grimace when she picks up my wrist.

“That hurts? Your burns are re-opened, which sucks, too, and this won’t feel good either.” She rotates my hand, doing this weird position that has me yelping out in pain. Worried that Sylvester will come running to save the day, or try to, I slap my hand over my mouth.

“You need X-rays. It’s not a sprain. And while I can redress your wounds, I can’t do anything for a fracture or a break. I’m sorry, Fawn.” The last time she helped me out, I told her about my aversion to hospitals. The only time I’ve been in a hospital is for being sick, tonsillitis when I was a young girl, broken collarbone when I fell off the ladder leading up to my treehouse. Coming home sucked, especially to see that your once safe place to read and hide out was destroyed. My father wasn’t having anything that could potentially hurt his girls, so yeah, my idea of a good time is not a hospital.

“Anyway, I can see a doctor who does X-rays in house as well as deal with the burn, too?” A compromise of some sort before the big growly bear reappears.

“That I can do. Let me make a phone call. I’m pretty sure you have a scaphoid fracture; it’s the small carpal bone in your wrist, so fine and delicate. It’s pretty easy to break, though usually it’s from a fall.” Vanessa spins into her medical jargon. You can tell she truly loves her job working as a nurse. Plus, this week she’s working nights and willing to stay up when I’m sure she’s dead on her feet.

“Yeah, I guess I was more or less at the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, if only I could get Sylvester to see that. Thank you again, Nessa. I truly appreciate it,” I tell her as she puts the cream on my wrist again. Sly, the ever-present man he is, had it all set up, ready to do it himself in case Vanessa didn’t get here in a timely manner that he’d be happy with.

“You’re welcome. I’m sure you can work your magic with Sylvester. From what Parker told me, you’ve settled something inside of him. All these men have their moments when you’ll want to wring their neck. They mean well, though.” She finishes taking care of my wrists, slips off her gloves, and goes for her phone, hopefully calling the same doctor I saw through a phone call. I really don’t want to reiterate what happened today, and he didn’t question me to death, probably Nessa’s doing.
